Construction of express ways in the hill country is not advisable due to environmental reasons, government MP Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thera told Parliament today.
Ven. Thera, who was speaking during the debate on the second reading of the budget said express ways in the hill country could result in natural disasters. “A major disaster can happen in the event of a flood as express ways will convert hill country into a highly populated area" he said.
“An express way was built along the slopes of Kathmandu in Nepal making the area highly populated. A major flood which occurred in the area destroyed a large number of human lives" he added.
“Construction of some express ways including the Central express ways had been proposed in the budget but I believe these could be amended through a dialogue" he further said. (Yohan Perera)

As much as i love the convienience of a highway i agree. The hill country is special the way it is. Why risk changing it.

Before you talk please study European and US highways which are more higher elevation than US. Its pity to take Nepal as an example which is a very poor country and much higher elevation than us . Do you believe that Kandy people should live in Caves?

True, the roads should be built like the expressways with limited speed, after all one cannot negotiate a bend at a fast speed in the hill country!

Well....you can drive your new land cruiser on the new highway. The highway will also help you to actually show up in parliament and do some work!

People who support not to build the highway need to think why roads are developed if you go by his logic we wont be having any roads to any place...only Karathe on roads via DM Android App

Please please please make this expressway! As a Kandyan spending hours on the road each week travelling back and forth from Colombo, I implore you to do this asap. With proper feasibility studies and careful measures to minimize environmental damage of course! I love the environment; and so I say, please build this road so we don't burn so much fossil fuel on each trip to and from kandy, contributing to global warming and air pollution. Please build this so we can go home soon, preferably without being stuck in traffic, at 10 in the night. please build this so we can be better connected to other major cities and improve overall infrastructure in the country.

protect the environment and reserve the lands which needs to be protected to avoid landslides.Constructing Centrel express way will reduced the environmental pollution due to fuel burning for 4-6 hrs by slow moving vehicle on the road.
