The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed that students' activities at the Jaffna university should be organised only with the agreement of the Senate hereafter, Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament yesterday.
The Minister made this remark in response to questions by the opposition on the tense situation created after the clash between the two student groups .
He said a committee had been appointed to conduct inquiries regarding the incident. It consists of D.P.K.U. Gunatilake of Jaffna Engineering Faculty, Dr. K.Muhundan of Medical Faculty and Dr.P.S. Navaratne .
He also said the Kopay police were conducting investigations into it.
"The students involved in the clash have been identified separately. The main suspect, Kanageswaran Sisitharan, who surrendered to the police was later bailed out," the Minister said. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
