There is no standard on tests performed on vehicle emission for motor vehicles when obtaining the certification for the annual renewal of vehicle revenue licence, Sri Lankan racing driver Dilantha Malagamuwa said.

He also said that the Government should relax the tax on electric vehicles so as to reduce pollution instead of focusing on emission tests.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror he said due to huge traffic congestion billions of litres of fuel is burnt by idling engines.

“I’m totally against on Vehicle Emission Testing (VET) and it should be withdrawn because nothing towards the betterment of the environment takes place. The progress of the VET can be seen when we look at the roads,” he said.

The Government had made the VET compulsory for the renewals of annual revenue licences only to increase Government revenue, but it had not helped reduce environmental pollution,” he said.

“80 percent of the vehicles fail the VET. More vehicles should be taken out from the road as they are unfit and polluting. But so far no vehicles had been removed from the road for failing VET,” Mr. Malagamuwa said.

Therefore, the Government should take measures to relax the huge tax, is which imposed on electric vehicles, when importing them and should take measures to promote them even-though the Government incurred a loss, he said.

“Also the Government should take measures to operate a mobile service to detect vehicles with high emission and to take legal actions against them.

“The fine on traffic offences and the road rules and regulations should be increased, also the Government should take actions for vehicle drivers tooting indecently,” Mr. Malagamuwa said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

There has been reduction of emissions due to the test, but Bribes also work. And look at the CTB buses!

    Dee Friday, 22 December 2017 07:13 AM

Won't agree. At least the govt is putting a some effort . When a test fails they have to do some adjustment to get it mix correct. Maybe replace filters etc (if not for test that too would not happen) . Unlike the days testing was started, additional 500.00 won't get a failed vehicle passed now. To begin with he should understand that this is not Japan, where we dispose cars every few years. Also the only way of reducing congestion in this country is to impose congestion fee . Not further reducing tax on any kind of vehicles . Reducing tax on vehicles means even a person who would walk a km or two will buy a car and add to congestion . One needs to understand the mentality of our people when making statements .

    Totally agree with you.

This tax in no way is concerned about emission control but only interested in scraping in huge profits for his friends companies through which he probably gets his cut.All the government vehicles including tri forces are exempt from this tax.So are all the CTB buses, railways and hundreds of ships and air crafts that ply by and over our island.

    You are Absolutely Correct...!!!

Mr. Dilantha,Please go do your car racing without getting involved in Political issues! If you need to do Politics do it openly!

    N-Wire-Mental Friday, 22 December 2017 07:36 AM

    So, another axe-pert?

    DPerera Friday, 22 December 2017 07:43 AM

Vehicle Emission Testing has already reduce the level of emissions and it should be retained and strongly enforced. Electric vehicles are not a solution as they will simply transfer emissions from vehicles to power stations resulting in coal burning and more pollution.

I had a dream!!!! I had a dream that every car that runs on the road will be forced to install an equipment that sucks in air and purifies it. The effort may reduce pollution to an extent. Vehicle users contribute to environmental pollution. They can take responsibility. I had a dream and the dream will be a dream for every.

    Sharon Friday, 22 December 2017 08:31 AM

So happy to see people of your caliber talking about the country. We are with you......

    Bhavi Friday, 22 December 2017 09:19 AM

Emission test must be done based on the number of millages the vehicle run, not on an annual basis because most of the government vehicles run hundreds of kilometers in a year also undergo emission test on the annual basis.

    gura Friday, 22 December 2017 09:45 AM

If the vehicle emission test is OK, their can't be smoke emitting vehicles on the Road .But after so many years you can see them, specially CTB Buses,Three Wheeler and some Lorries .VET is just like VAT another tax without understating what is VET and VAT stand for even.

    SENA Friday, 22 December 2017 10:14 AM

Its good to know that you don't agree with VET. I am sure you are good at racing but in evaluating VET. I have to agree with Dee. Someone more knowledgeable in this subject, please enlighten us.

    Terminator> Friday, 22 December 2017 10:30 AM

Mr. Dilantha, I totally agree with you. As I know the government consider the amount of revenue out of emission test every year and honestly not aware of protecting the environment.

    RohanSam Friday, 22 December 2017 10:40 AM

Exactly, look at all the Belching Govt. vehicles and Buses on the Road? Never seen a Belching vehicle stopped by the Police. No one cares.

    Lalith Friday, 22 December 2017 10:51 AM

We need more strict Emission tests. What is the point of development and technology if we cant even breath fresh air?

    Cleo Friday, 22 December 2017 10:52 AM

We are trying to be a tourist destination but day by day our air is becoming toxic. Who would come here if we become like New Delhi?

    Unchikun Friday, 22 December 2017 11:23 AM

I am not sure what is point is. The only solution is nothing else but improving the public transport. It is not buses. It has to be rail, underground, ground and overhead. London, Tokyo, Singapore are good examples.

    George Friday, 22 December 2017 06:24 PM

I agree.... I strongly believe on the vehicle safety instead of this pollution rubbish .... Can never stop that in Srilanka. When I my vehicle fails the VET test... All you need is a couple of bucks to get it passed...
