A A A

It is the duty and responsibility of all politicians to work jointly to ensure the peaceful co-existence among all religious communities and ethnic groups, but however with the aim of increasing the vote base the actions of some politicians have aggravated the position, states a statement issued by the Maha Sanga of the Three Nikayas.

Maha Sanga had over the years on several occasions adviced on being of good behaviour and for the well-being of the country, the recent incidents points out that these advices had been overlooked and as a result the country is now gripped with a dangerous situation.

At a time the country is facing an unfortunate situation, declaring that Sri Lanka is not a Sinhala Buddhist Country, with the aim of increasing someone’s voter base is an attempt to throw straw at the fire and not a measure to ease the tension of the masses, the statement states further.

This statement under the signatures of the Chief Prelate of the Malwathu Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya Most Ven Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, the Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya Most Ven Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thera, the Mahanayake of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Nikaya Most Ven Napane Pemasiri Thera and the Maha Nayake of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya Most Ven Kotugoda Dammawasa Thera, states that during the rule of Devanampiyatissa a Buddhist kingdom was born in the country.

Though Caste and Language was a line of division, the Sinhala Buddhist nation who were disciplined by the influence of the sacred teachings of Buddhism, co-existed peacefully throughout history.

Sri Lankans who lived for generations through toleration and compromise, witnessed the arrival of Muslims who are the cause of the present crisis entering our country as a business community winning the kind hearts and the confidence of the natives.

Under the cover of tolerance and assistance when needed the great noble qualities of Buddhism they integrated and became part of our nation and an environment of peaceful co-existence emerged. The growth of friendliness between the Sinhala and Muslim people continued up to the present times.

Not only with the Muslims, the Buddhist conducted their affairs with other communities and members of other religions as brothers. With the spate of the recent inhuman atrocities, ethnic and religious conflicts had now surged.

At this time of crisis a responsible Minister making a remark to the effect that Sri Lanka is not a Sinhala Buddhist Country is deplorable and it is adding straw to the burning fire.

It is also observed that instead of consoling the victims of the Easter Sunday victims, and building hope and ensuring the application of rule of law and meeting out justice that some are engaged in activities in fostering further pain and suffering.

As a result of not acting promptly and taking adequate preventive measures, provocative incidents are taking place. It is very regretting that despite the discourses of the Maha Sanga the inaction of the authorities are again prompting us to draw their attention.

It is the duty of everyone to extend cooperation and assistance to the members of the security forces who are now engaged in providing security to each and everyone.

With the onset of the Buddha’s thrice blessed Wesak Poya Day, it is prudent to create a peaceful environment to celebrate this great event. Therefore, we call upon all Sri Lankans to refrain from engaging in hostile activities and continue to act peacefully and avoid acts of violence.
