The Malambe Private Medical College better known as SAITM, hailed the Appeal Court ruling which allows the provisional registration of SAITM's MBBS graduates.

Chief Executive Officer Dr. Sameera Senaratne said in a statement that according to the laws of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) was always obliged to register students with a degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from a degree-awarding institute, as per section 29(1)(b)(i) of the Medical Ordinance, amended in 1988, in the same manner as a student with a degree from a State medical faculty.

"The refusal by the SLMC to grant due provisional registration to SAITM's MBBS graduates was subsequently successfully challenged in the Appeal Court vide Case No.: CA/WRIT/187/2016," he said.

“Today’s decision also reaffirms the legal basis of SAITM as per Gazette Extraordinary No.1721/19 dated 30/11/2011 and subsequently No.1829/36 dated 26/09/2013 in terms of Section 25A of the Universities Act of 1978, and tabled in Parliament, to award the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).” “SAITM has always confidently asserted that its MBBS degree programme is on par with or even better than similar programmes offered by some state/foreign medical faculties”.

Dr. Senaratne said the historic ruling by the Appeal Court was a victory for SAITM's MBBS students who can now take their rightful place as fully-fledged doctors in this country.

"They have endured many hardships from opposing parties and now we are happy that justice has finally been served. We will continue to uphold the standards of the medical education in Sri Lanka in collaboration with all relevant authorities to produce doctors of highest standards,” he said.

Dr. Senaratne said the ruling is a just recognition of the rights of all institutions such as SAITM and the people of this country, who have steadfastly fought for the freedom of education in Sri Lanka. (S.S. Selvanayagam)

Read Court verdict which legally says SAITM is already approved by University Act 16. No need of 2nd approval. These intellectual Deans don't know their own Uni. Act.

Independence of judiciary, Congratulations President and CJ. We need much more Doctors from private universities.

    comrade Tuesday, 31 January 2017 02:17 PM

Good but these student should take Act 16 before registration i think it is not unreasonable because other students who get foreign medical degrees take that.

    Lokka Tuesday, 31 January 2017 04:03 PM

Those goons of protesting students can jump to the sea now.

    dr.s.dharmadasa Tuesday, 31 January 2017 04:03 PM

i am a doctor from peradeniya medical faculty. i had to send my 3 children abroad for medical education. thosedays saiitm was not there. they all become doctors andworking now. i spent lot of money. if there was privateuniversity that money would have been spent in srilanka

    aravinda Tuesday, 31 January 2017 04:04 PM

Very wise decision. A well known fact is, since the '70s every year approximately 80% of qualified entrants did not get the opportunity to pursue post secondary education due to lack of space in the state universities. Had these institutions been allowed to function since back then, a large number of students would have obtained their post secondary education through them.

    SAITM Tuesday, 31 January 2017 04:04 PM

Hi sena. I am glad that you are happy for the decision. Few clarifications.I hope your child will be able to achieve his/her life goals but to enter SAITM she/he needs minimum requirements made by the UGC from local A/Ls or other equivalent stream. We are more than happy to review your CV for a position but I hope you have necessary qualifications and experience in that area of concern. Feel free to contact SAITM or UGC for further information

    RDF Tuesday, 31 January 2017 04:21 PM

As you do not know of the meaning of ERPM ( not Act 16 anymore) please keep the ignorance to yourself.

    Ganesh Tuesday, 31 January 2017 04:28 PM

Those who study at tax payers money and run away abroad even during the severe war situation some ungratel selfish Jaffna graduates left the country for their betterment not caring dying people .These students spend millions with their eligibility .Good verdict

    Asoka Tuesday, 31 January 2017 04:37 PM

These SAITAM students too will be part of the money hungry lot...

Rai Subasinghe Tuesday, 31 January 2017 05:18 PM

Great news! SLMC recognition obtained even with a 10 member independent committee submitting a report highlighting number of flaws. Ideal time for other private medical faculties to establish themselves.

Rubert Vanderkoon Tuesday, 31 January 2017 05:26 PM

it was previous government who facilitated and established SAITM.

    Student Tuesday, 31 January 2017 05:35 PM

So does that mean that international students can join saitm? I have a plan in joining in 2018 september and do they accept IB curriculum ( international baccalaurate) in saitm?? It is another form of A levels and it comes from geneva( one of the most leading curriculums today)

    sachira Wednesday, 01 February 2017 05:30 AM

SAITM graduates got a better training than other state students. all these problems are created by jealous people. They deserve this.

    Manithan Wednesday, 01 February 2017 05:48 AM

Quality of healthcare will degrade slowly.Government had not acted in manner it had to.SAITM will upgrade their standardard as per SLMC requirement.God save the poor patients of this country

    watcher Wednesday, 01 February 2017 06:28 AM

Court verdict says SAITM is already approved by University Act 16. So a 2nd approval unnecessary.

Truth triumphs Tuesday, 31 January 2017 02:04 PM

Congrats and best wishes to Dr Neville Fernando for his foresight to leave behind an institution that will help those children who missed entry to the state medical college by a whisker. At 86 he weathered a great storm created by those who could not appreciate a great deed.

Gregory Fernando Wednesday, 01 February 2017 06:36 AM

Rich Always wins is what I see, highly connected with lot of means will be the Big Winners. As for Losers only time will judge.

    Lion Wednesday, 01 February 2017 06:39 AM

Very good decision. Students do not have to spend millions over seas to become doctors. Mapiha attitude of our doctors will not last long once these institutes starts producing doctors who got required A,level qualification. JVP will never be able to get power in this country by supporting the elements who oppose the setting up of private universities. How many private universities India ,Russia,China, even Bagladesh have. Once we get enough doctors those doctors resort to strike actions to get their unjustifiable demands will become a thing in the past. Hail the judiciary for this decision.

    Shenali Wednesday, 01 February 2017 07:00 AM

Congrats SAITM and all students but pls uphold the standard of education and clinical training to make sure you prove all these protesters wrong. i have been treated since birth by many doctors educated in Srilanka with due respect to all of them i want to point out these...1. Are the state run medical school students really protesting to benefit the society or for their own gain ? if its for the society then they should pressurize that saitm students also sit the same exam as overseas students and training been monitored - not close saitm2. Also you are educated with the srilankan tax payers money to serve srilankans - how many of you get the education and immediately fly abroad to earn $$$ these people who protest should be made to pay back all the money for their education if they go abroad3.Is there any proof to say someone with 3As will be a better doctor than someone with 2CS- medical education is very different from A/Ls same way O/Ls very different from A/Ls

    sud Wednesday, 01 February 2017 07:02 AM

Really ??? you are saying only the jaffna graduates left the country - are you brain dead i think there are more sinhalese doctors from srilanka in australia now than the ones left in lanka

The protest demonstration will go on as long as there is jealousy and hatred among people towards others. These people are born with those bad qualities and are not religious minded.May they realize the reality one final day.

    Realist Wednesday, 01 February 2017 09:41 AM

The SAITM students paid 30 Million to buy their degree. I hope the people who commented here wont cry when they start collecting that from their patients, while also being substandard docs :)

Chief Executive Officer Dr. Sameera Senaratne said in a statement that according to the laws of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) was always obliged to register students with a degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from a degree-awarding institute -Is it correct ? SLMC can consider the non accreditated courses for registration also.

    Sue Wednesday, 01 February 2017 09:56 AM

Congratulations. Doctors qualifying from SAITM will be more decent, have better bedside manners and treat patients humanely. They will, I hope not resort to strike action because they have earned their degree after paying a lot of money whereas the GMOA doctors had it easy due to being educated by tax payers (our) money and as such they don't care.

    Mandy Wednesday, 01 February 2017 12:27 PM

But now instigating protests - how hypocritical.

    Deedee Wednesday, 01 February 2017 05:44 PM

    Nilini Friday, 03 February 2017 06:43 AM

WOW AWESOMENow we who got CCS can be doctors. And my friends who got BBB, ABB, AAB cant be doctors. So all we need to have is money to be doctors. Not a brain. This is awsome. We dont have to study for alevels and get CCS and easily become doctors by offering money. Yay for rich people!!!!!

This institute started their activities about 9 years back If it is not suitable to produce doctors .JVP and GMO should have protested and forced the government to do so in those days. Now after nine years suddenly JVP and GMO with the help of Anthare students are protesting.Majority of protesting students are from other faculties and they dont know why they are protesting. What JVP is trying is to win back university students who left them and joined with peratugamin. They think that only state universities should be in sri lanka and no answer to those who cant get admission to universities. So they are the people who ask power in 2020.

    Kaboos Tuesday, 31 January 2017 11:53 AM

We hope the government doctors will accept this historical decision and continue work together .

    Bingo Tuesday, 31 January 2017 11:55 AM

    Nando Tuesday, 31 January 2017 12:44 PM

sorry, your son will have to find his education elsewhere. SAITM does not accept students who have not passed A/L.

Common Citizen Tuesday, 31 January 2017 12:52 PM

this is exactly how government health sector break apart. doctors leave government sector and join with private sector. eventually health sector will be privatized

    BuffaloaCitizen Tuesday, 31 January 2017 12:57 PM

Now we will be able to see the quality of doctors passed out from local universities to the doctors from private universities. Simply said, those coconut pluckers who managed to get into medical college and become doctors will now have to show their competency and professionalism with those coming out from the Private Medical Colleges.

THE BEST THING IS TO HAVE A ASSOCIATION CALLED 'PMOA' -PRIVATE MEDICAL OFFICERS ASSOCIATION AND TO BE REGISTER INTHE GOVERNMENT,SO GMOA AND PMOA COULD GO IN PARALLEL.SO BOTH PARTIES BENEFITTED WITH THEIR EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS.

    Prarthana Tuesday, 31 January 2017 01:36 PM

Well done. Good decision and congrats to all the students at SAITM medical faculty. All your effort was not a waste. The best decision for a bright future.

    Mo1986 Tuesday, 31 January 2017 01:37 PM

There was no any detail about condition of the registration. I think SAITM student should passed ACT16 for their registation at SLMC. There should be government insititution for regulating and maintaining quality of private universities.
