Private bus owners will launch an island wide strike protesting against the government’s decision to impose a minimum penalty of Rs. 2,500 for traffic offences, which was proposed in the 2017 budget.
Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne today said the Union had not changed it stance on the matter. The move will lock horns with the government, which has made it clear that its decision will not be changed.
Wijeratne also said the Union had scheduled a meeting with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake this evening. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

I recommend the penalty should include a forced training course in public transport especially for those who are in public transport. Private institution runners should come forward to design a syllabus and obtain the government approval. It is business and service. Let's go beyond Singapore in our own way.

They should introduce a/c buses in cities. IF there was a decent public transport the number of cars and Tuks will reduce.

Lets see whether Ravi or Ranil has a backbone.....
Nihal Amarasekera Monday, 14 November 2016 07:13 PM
Don't think this proposal of Ravi and the clan is about thinking of innocent people who die through rash driving. No it is about another way of increasing the coffer. They are out of control and trying various ways of "taxing". Improve the quality of CTB

Many accidents are due slow moving traffic in roads SL Roads . It takes more than 5hrs to reach Kandy from Colombo(25km/hr for 5hrs ) , take 8 odd hrs to reach ampara if you drive in peak hours. Gvt should address these issues rather than trying to pick pocket money from drivers to match the budget deficit

Bala Monday, 14 November 2016 05:11 PM
Ravi please stick to it for sake of all those 3000 odd who die annually. The country is behind you. Otherwise Prisoners in Death Row Association will ask for one year imprisonnment instead for murder. This is a Bond issue - Licence to kill.
