Scientific surveys have found out the oxygen percentage in the atmosphere of the Colombo city is gradually declining in proportion to its population, the Ministry of Environment said.

This was raised during a discussion held at the Ministry of Environment with the participation of subject minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake, and other officials today.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Environment together with the Colombo Municipal Council has planned to launch a tree planting programme to address the issue. It has also been planned to initiate a day-to-day oxygen testing prograe in the city of Colombo.

Moreover, Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake requested the Ministry of Environment to provide necessary expertise and technical assistance for the conservation of the environment in the Colombo Municipal area. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Don't let it hamper development. We need high rise building, highway etc. And like the learned minister once said, ' oxygen for what?'

    G abe Thursday, 04 March 2021 05:21 PM

That's what happens when u cut trees down and destroy the sea to build, alot of oxygen comes from the sea from algae and corals, how much coral is being destroyed? And even near my home officials are cutting down trees a hundred years or more old, clearing wildlife habitats aswell, officials need to balance development with environmental conservation, but people r greedy, sell off protected lands to make money for themselves

ස promised a cleaner environment and is going about it by turning a blind eye to the massive illegal deforestation taking place Island wide . Colombo is a concrete jungle filled with Co2

    Milinda Thursday, 04 March 2021 06:20 PM

Rosey anty time is ripe to plant more trees in the Colombo city and restrict vehicle traffic to the city. Also stop construction of skyscrapers with in city limits and move construction of sky rise buildings to the PORT CITY area.

    Siribiris Thursday, 04 March 2021 06:31 PM

Nimal Gunawardena Thursday, 04 March 2021 06:38 PM

Colombo used to be the garden city of South East Asia. However due to overdevelopment without making any plans to green up the city. I can remember the big Mara tree's that gave shelter from the hot sunshine and gave much-needed habitats to the native birds are cut down , Let's replace what's lost before it's too late.

fellow citizens we are used to blame others, but each and every one responsible for the damages. 1.stop burning garbage and polytene around our houses, instead bury the composable things and rest handover to garbage collectors 2. every house should leave a space to plant at least one big tree 3. service our cars in time so the carbon emission can be reduced 4. grow small plants and flower plants which will purify the air 5. there should be community areas and parks with lot of trees in each part of colombo 6. municipal should have plans for long time solution, not temporary plans

Capitalism drives people to cities to operate their production. The companies transfer their factories to third world countries for cheap labour and most of all to escape from environment pollution. Even though we think having a factory at home is a benefit, ultimately it's a curse. We yet to pay the real cost.

Solutions 1) Encourage Hybrid and Electric vehicles. Give tax consessions. But the batteries should have 300,000 mile or 8 year full replacement warranty as in other countries. 2) Have only Hybrid or Electric addition to busses. 3) Phase out three wheelers. 4) Plant trees. Prohibit cuttin down trees without approval. 5) Phase out none electric vehicle by 2030. All petrol, deisel vehicles should be banned from entering Colombo district from 2025.
