The COVID-19 situation in most of the areas in the country has gone out of hands due to the negligence and poor sense of responsibility from the part of general public, the Public Health Inspectors' Union claimed.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Union Secretary M. Balasuriya said people have taken the gravity of the COVID-19 situation in the country for granted.

“People living in areas where curfew and isolation status are imposed, have forgotten to follow the basic health guidelines. This is a very pathetic situation and we, as health officials felt very sad to note this,” he stressed.

“We can’t go behind them and ask them to adhere to the guidelines. There is always limits for everything. Nevertheless, it has to be said that we have not yet given up,” he underlined.

He reiterated that people's negligence had led to the present alarming situation in terms of COVID-19 spread in the country.

Therefore, he requested people to cooperate with health officials, so that the situation would bounce back on correct track with the rollout of vaccination. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Thank you gentlemen for your observation and confirmation. We the ordinary citizen on the street new this situation about a month ago. The only solution is to vaccinate the population as soon as possible. Please note this vaccine protects against the infection. Your specialist doctors have a different opinion.

On the contrary the government with health authorities sorely rely on the vaccine but administering one dose would only reduce severity of the disease and by the time the second dose is administered, the vulnerable group wold be at risk.

    Jehan Thursday, 28 January 2021 09:29 PM

Don't worry. We have started getting the vaccines.

OVID-19 situation gone out of control because Government didnt order the COVID vaccine from USA ahead of time due to fear of upsetting China. All other countries including Singapore placed advance orders to Pfizer and Moderna vaccines from USA and all the vaccines have been received to vaccinate their entire polulation in those countries

This was expected when the head of the Army was heading the COVID Centre. Government was slow to engage the medical profession or receive their advice, guidance or help

To blame is the government of the Great Dictator and his military henchmen. They are unable to control this situation. Gota with all his 100 thousands of idling soldiers are not in the position to force lockdowns and force the people to obey the health rules. Gota will go down in the Sri Lankan history at the most useless Leader.

Have we passed the Point of No Return? Can't we have a coherent approach with set goals, to allocate tasks and responsibilities to each group? Get rid of those giving running commentary on the situation, like an unattached observer.

    Erandi Friday, 29 January 2021 08:56 AM

Now it’s hard to just say that people don’t behave. Even the health minister is in icu and 6 more ministers infected. They too have not been responsible. Let’s face it. The government has no health policy nor a proper plan to help the vulnerable and needy in such a situation.

Public should be advised what type of masks to be used, how to use it, when to wash it and when to discard it , This advise from the health authorities will help a lot to control the pandemic.

The rich and the affluent are selfish and break the laws and continue to party (no penalty) while the poor often break the law trying to earn their daily bread! Sad situation.
