COPE to decide on BOC Seychelles branch

13 April 2016 12:00 pm - 24     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

The Committee on Public Enterprises ( COPE) is to issue a directive on the continence of Bank of Ceylon Seychelles branch shortly, Parliamentary sources said yesterday.

An MP who is a prominent member of COPE told Daily Mirror that the committee had called for a report on the performance of this branch from the authorities of the Bank. He said the decision on the bank will be made by COPE after its study of the banks’ performance.

However, sources said there was only three customers who had been transacting with the branch in Seychelles.

The branch opened on January 20, 2014, was the first ever Bank of Ceylon branch in an African country. (Yohan Perera)

    BOC branch in foreign country with only 3 customers? What a joke if the news is correct? How many staff working there?

    COPE means it is going under the carpet? No CID or top auditors?

    This news is wrong. I work in Seychelles. BOC has become a reputed bank in this country. More than 2000 Sri lankans live here and do top jobs such as charted accounts, planters, entertainment industry, media, hospitality and in the Navy. Even the former CJ was a Sir Lankan if I am not mistaken. Some company's has more than 40 Sri Lankans working for them such as UCPS an engineering company. Some live here for more than 15 years.

    COPE must give BOC time frame say 7 days to submit report. Why delay.

    CitizenPerera Friday, 15 April 2016 01:47 AM

    Its not worth crying over spilled milk. Does it take a government over two years to shut these operations and eliminate state enterprises running at a loses? Those in government now should have opposed these bad decisions when they served the opposition and not now.

    I think it cheaper to legalise fraud for politicians and their cronies than to investigate them because the so called investigation is another fraud.

    No sane person will not see the crooked financial dealings going on to establish a Bank of Ceylon branch on a well known country that earns its living by being a haven such as the Seyschelles to hide their ill gotten lucre. M.R. and his whole family of crooks should have been long hauled before the Judiciary and asked to answer to the people how they acquired all that wealth. We just cant imagine a country that opens Diplomatic relations of no consequence just to facilitate illegal money laundering by a bunch of crooked politicians and their family. Why don't Ranil and the so called real decent people see the light. These fellows are still running riot like Basil and Gota and the Sons and all sorts of unsavoury Sajin . Please Editor publish this response in full . We expect better editorial sense and express the peoples right to freedom of speech.

    "panama papers" also has a branch there. How convenient !

    Sri Wickrama Wednesday, 13 April 2016 03:09 PM

    Not only that. A through probe should be initiated on suspicious transactions taken place in the branch.

    When a knife is given to a monkey, it can become very dangerous. Similarly when absolute power is given to individuals, activities such as this can happen. This bank was opened when MaRa was the President of this country and Minister of Finance.

    Bala Wednesday, 13 April 2016 12:54 PM

    If there were only three customers, it may be prudent to check all transactions.
