The countrywide bus strike to be launched tomorrow was called off after discussions with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said a short while ago.

The private bus operators had earlier warned they would launch the strike from tomorrow if the government did not rescind its decision to impose a minimum penalty of Rs.2,500 for traffic offences.

Mr. Wijeratne told Daily Mirror that the finance minister assured them he would decide on this matter after he takes it up at tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting.

He said another meeting has been scheduled with the finance minister tomorrow evening. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

This Gemunnu is a strong UNP guy. He even contested under UNP. Not surprising that the government will bend down to what he says.

Blaming to politicians is meaningless because we are the ones who send this buggers to parliament. they are the decision makers all we have to do is "dena deyak kaala wena deyak balagen siteema" until next election comes. This circle will never change

The Realist Monday, 14 November 2016 07:37 PM

Why am I not surprised to read this? Oh yes, the government as always, bending down to these pathetic and murderous unions. How many more should die at the hands of these murderous bus drivers, for the government to wake up?!?! Shame on all the corrupt and disgusting politicians! Shame!!!

Only shows that they are well aware that they break all rules when they drive.

    Yahapalanaya Tuesday, 15 November 2016 07:35 AM

What ever said said done, such blatant protests are possible under Yahapalanaya. In the past by now, all would have been searching for Gemunu the next world. Also not to forget, all because of Yahapalanaya we have such a unruly wilful band (lead by a shady character ), who are able to incite (and pull strings) to get others to dance to their tunes .

High time to consider of having a state run transport system as done in other countries where commuters would get to a train or a bus from the nearest stop to their residents. Less traffic, No hassle, No threats by thugs!
