To enhance social distancing and other precautions taken by the government to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the Attorney General has sent a letter to Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasooriya PC today requesting to cancel the Court sittings in the High Court scheduled for the next two curfew days. In the letter, Attorney General Dappula de Livera said that it would be most undesirable to expose officials of the Court, Lawyers, State Counsel, the Police and Judges to participate and appear in court proceedings which are scheduled to be taken place to consider High Court bail applications. He said that most of the cases were serious drug cases which at the moment stand over 100 where lawyers have filed motions for these matters to be taken up in Court within next two days, which fall outside the decision of the Covid-19 prevention committee appointed by the President. Accordingly, in the letter, the Attorney General urged the Chief Justice to cancel the High Court proceedings scheduled to next two days and reschedule sittings when the environment is conducive for the same.
