Security was strengthened at the Sri Lankan Refugee Camp in N.Mettupatti as tension prevailed over the murder of six-year-old Sirija alias Srinidhi.

According to police sources, the girl was raped before being killed. “The victim’s naked body was found in a cement pipe under the culvert on Tiruchi Road, about a kilometre from the camp, during the late hours of Sunday. The body had a deep slit on the throat and injuries on the arms. She could have been murdered elsewhere as there were no bloodstains in or near the pipe,” a police officer said.

Her mother Jayaseeli (38) said around 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sirija, the second of her three children, went out to the open ground near the camp to answer nature’s call. “We searched for her from 4 p.m. but could find only her body,” said the inconsolable mother.

N. Sivakumar (14) and his friend Dhayalan (11) said that they were playing cricket when they saw the girl come near the play area. “We asked her to go to a safer place as she could be hit by the ball. She immediately left the place,” they added. People in the camp wore a worried look and many of them did not go to work on Monday. “Sirija was liked by all for her smart talk and approach and it came as a shock when we found her dead”, said Saroja (46), a neighbour. According to her, it was the first such incident in the 20-year-old camp.

N. Navamani (27), another neighbour, said that most parents were daily wagers. “They usually go to the market in Valayapatti, about five km from the camp, on Sunday afternoons for their weekly purchase. The culprit involved in the cruel act could have taken advantage of this time to commit the crime”, she said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) M. Sathiya Priya said three special teams were formed under Additional Superintendent of Police G. Subbulakshmi and two Deputy Superintendents of Police to nab the culprit. “We are checking all the men in the camp. Search is on for her clothes as it could help in the investigation”, the SP said and added that the body was taken to the Namakkal Government Hospital on Sunday night and shifted to the Salem GH for post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, people in the camp grew suspicious of a 29-year-old refugee and beat him up severely as he reportedly told campers that the girl could not be found in a particular direction. But the body was found from the direction he came. People said that he was known for stealing clothes of adolescent girls and was warned in the past,” police said. He was admitted to Namakkal General Hospital. (The Hindu)

Don't talk nonsense. come to the point...you look like a another rapist who think about relative numbers and percentages in other countries and make stupid arguments...what matters is our country and our protection for these lovely kids....don't promote numbers and just take the point....

    Iver Tuesday, 17 July 2012 02:42 PM

When I read all these comments, feel like except very few sensible comments, most of Sri Lankans are blaming and passing the ball to others....It is not about other countries and it is social plight....we need immediate capital punishments for these kind of ill fated people...Otherwise, in near future we will classify as uncivilized society...

    CHANDRAPALA Tuesday, 17 July 2012 03:32 PM

Why did they flee to India? Because of the war between the LTTE and the army. Now the war is over. Why don't they return to their native place? We have to think about this on humanitarian ground.

    farieze Tuesday, 17 July 2012 04:17 PM

this is horrible-where is the safety in Tamil Nadu? Jayalalitha is just barking about SRI LANKA. SRI LANKA is the best safety for

    Dinithi Tuesday, 17 July 2012 05:14 PM

The fact that she was killed means the rapist murderer is known to this girl...could be somebody she hangs around with.

    Nodrog Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:55 AM

If it had happened in Jaffna the Army would have gotten the blame.

    yojee Tuesday, 17 July 2012 06:22 PM

    Matalan Wednesday, 18 July 2012 03:15 AM

The desperate sicko who could harm a 6 yr old should remove himself from this world, if he has any remorse and guts. This is a little child/daughter, so don't talk of SL worse or better than India crap. What is bad is bad and vice versa. Children belong to all of us. It is our responsibility to care for them.

    Jay Wednesday, 18 July 2012 03:12 AM

Now I know why TN people don't want SL defence perossonals in TN

    CN Wednesday, 18 July 2012 07:27 AM

Its really not about India or Sri Lanka. The main issue here is that someone was pathetic and inhuman enough to rape and murder an innocent 6 year old girl. It doesn't matter in which country she was in or her nationality, what should be done is to find that heartless person who committed this cruel crime and punish him for what he did. A child is a child irrespective of where he/she is from and as adults we should ensure their safety. Children gets raped not only in India and Sri Lanka but all over the world. Instead of blaming each other its high time we get our acts together and not only make our countries but our world a better place for our future generation.

    brinthan Wednesday, 18 July 2012 05:09 PM

the only protection for SL tamils is sepate TE under the respected movement which is famous for discipline by Un Report

    vaidy Tuesday, 17 July 2012 09:09 AM

Tamilnadu must hang the rapist and set an example to the neibhbouring countries deterent punshment is the only way to stop this menace

    prasanna Tuesday, 17 July 2012 08:02 AM

why these Sri Lankan people stay there without coming to Sri Lanka. They are Sri Lankan's and not indians. I believe they have more protection here than in India.

    Adam Tuesday, 17 July 2012 07:57 AM

And Karunanidhdhi talks about protecting Tamil civilians.. Disgusting!

    RF Tuesday, 17 July 2012 08:16 AM

Very sad to here these kind of stories now. Kids of 6 years too are no longer safe in our country now.....

    PRAD Tuesday, 17 July 2012 08:19 AM

Sadly this innocent daughter victimised to her own people around. It must be by someone who were very near, very close and known to her. Violence has no area, no race, no religion or no nationality. This must be stopped forthwith. Find culprits and impose maximum punishment.

    dimsun Tuesday, 17 July 2012 08:15 AM

If you are poor and dependent , there is no end for your misery. Poor soul.

    bandara Tuesday, 17 July 2012 09:22 AM

the same thing happened just a couple of weeks back at Kirulopana, what protection are you talking of Prasanna.
This was shown in all the news channels

    Achcharu Tuesday, 17 July 2012 09:18 AM

Don't use this news for Political leverage. Every community has a very few of these animals hidden, and it is unfortunate that this happened in Tiruchi, which has more deciplined pple than SL, though poverty lurks.

    Haran Tuesday, 17 July 2012 09:54 AM

Dude there was a 15 yr old girl raped two weeks ago or so by 20 or so men in Srilanka too.

    backstreetboys Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:07 AM

that ugly wind has blown that way too

buffaloa citizen Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:12 AM

If you look at the child rapes happening in SL, it is 10 times more while India has proportionately thousand time higher population. Certianly the Indian police will find the culprit in no time, where in SL they will dither and blame every mother than themselves. Further more, if this happened in Jaffna, it will not even get reported. The EPDP rapist of Delft island is still a free bird, remember.

    Thomas Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:37 AM

Very sad to hear the plight of the innocent 6 year old girl. May God give solace to the parents.

    LongLeg Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:50 AM

but a 6 year old girl for god's sake - it's wrong to accept any form of rape but molesting a 6 year old is just absoulutely sick. What does a 6 year old child know... iand then she was murdured so among two diplorable acts against humanity this is easily on top.

    LongLeg Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:55 AM

my guess is it was already there - its everywhere doesn't have to blow from some place.
