39 illegal asylum seekers netted in Matara

A group of 39 people were taken into custody from a house in the Kanattagoda police area in Matara while they were getting ready to flee to Australia illegally as asylum seekers last night, police said.

Eighteen men, seven women and 14 children were among the suspects and they were from Jaffna, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee areas.
The suspects are to be produced before the Matara Magistrate’s court today, police said.

    Chased away from their land and coastal villages, driven away from their only livelihood. Their only "hope" of feeding their children appears to be to escape to an unknown world. Shame on the rulers of this land.

    how come these guys are still going to aussie by boat ? i think human smugglers are not telling them they gonna endup in papua new guinea. we need to do a mass campaign and educate people here. TV ads dont work anymore. lack of education makes them fall in to traps like this. i assume they dont even know where on earth is papua new guniea and what sort of life people have there.
