36 diplomats recalled

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has decided to recall 36 politically appointed Sri Lankan diplomats.

The decision had been taken at a meeting on Wednesday.

Lakshman Hulugalla the former head of the Media Centre for National Security was also among those recalled.

These diplomats had been working in various positions as second secretaries, third secretaries and ministers.

Earlier the government had decided to recall 29 political appointees serving as ambassadors and high commissioners.(Kelum Bandara)

These people were drawing their salary and engaging in their personal improvement. No qualification and they have become overnight diplomats. The new government should bring a proper policy and check and balance in the appointments in the future.

fBring back all the trade commissioners to sri lanka to the mundane jobs they were doing,and now ducking for cover when the so called king has lost,or sir they will ruin the trade and the foreign office,with hardly any qualifications they entered the service over looking career diplomats the ones in Sydney and Melbourne.The High Commissioner was a very fine diplomat kept his status all the time and mingled with the useless lot keep him here Sir

Training provided by the Ministry AFTER they have been selected is rubbish. If they are qualified they must be selected after a COMPETITIVE exam, not because they know A, B, or MR for that matter. There are more deserving qualified people who lose out because the previous government promoted this sort of favorites. Regardless of training provided by the foreign ministry, Political Appointees should be sent home.

In my opinion Sri Lankan diplomats should engage in seeking economic partnerships from foreign countries. That would include manufacturing plants utilizing Sri Lankan labor, exporting of goods and services from Sri Lankan owned companies. Also seeking assistance and expertise in infrastructure and medical innovation. Also diplomats should become friendly with the host countries government. Finally they should educated themselves on the various industries located in their host country and regularly promote Sri Lanka as a wonderful tourist destination and as a potential business partner for future expansion. This is just my opinion.

What do military or ex-military men know about diplomacy and foreign policy? Appoint trained, qualified, multi-lingual persons/carrier diplomats to these positions so that they do not jut lie abroad for the good of the country!

Only talk and no action. The Government announces recalling of political appointees to embassies everyday but actually it is taking a long time to take action. Just like taking Duminda and Shashi to custody. Government should also give the names of those recalled. We have Right To Information.
