Prelate protests opening road near Maligawa

The Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakhita Thera yesterday expressed his concern and the displeasure over the decision to reopen the road in front of the historic Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

The Thera expressed his views in response to an intention put forward by the Leader of the House and Minister of Plantation industries Lakshman Kiriella, when he paid a courtesy call to see the Asgiriya Mahanayaka Thera yesterday (22).

The Thera also expressed his protest to the minister on reopening of the road in front of the most revered religious Buddhist site for whatever reasons.
The Mahanayake Thera instead made a suggestion to build an alternative road.

The former Diyawadana Nilame and opposition leader (UNP) of the Kandy Municipality Neranjan Wijeyaratna was also present at the occasion. (J.A.L. Jayasinghe)

I agree with the Asgiriya Mahanayaka Thera, it is not because I am worrying about terror attacks but is a treasure of SL and it should be protected and preserved. Vibration and wind loading impacts of fast moving vehicle could damage the holy place also the dust generated from regular moving traffic will also damage the site and the noise from them will disturbed the peaceful environment.The government should find alternative solution for the traffic issue.

The only solution that I see is to dig a tunnel under the lake. Then pessimists will come up with another reason. Lankaave nam mona reddak vath karanna baha, pandithayo vadiyi.

We must open the road by the maligawa and remove the absurd barricades as vehicles doing extra 4 miles around the lake is causing severe pollution.
