A total of 21 Pradeshiya Sabha members and organisers, who supported UNP defectors Dayasiri Jayasekara and Johnston Fernando today pledged to support Maithripala Sirisena together with three other SLFP Pradeshiya Saba members.

The 21 PS members from the North Western Province said they made a unanimous decision to support the common candidate as they wanted to change the dictatorial government.

The supporters also said they were holding discussions with other PS members who were willing to pledge their support to the Common candidate.

PS members from Panduwasnuwara, Bingiriya, Nikaweratiya, Udabaddawa,  Kobeigana, Narammala and Allawwa said they would increase Sirisena’s votes by 25,000.

North Western Provincial Council Opposition Leader J. C Alawathuwala said they decided to support Sirisena as they wanted a better future for their children.

“If the President is reelected it his family and children that will gain from it, not our children,” he said.

Alawathuwala said they were not bound to support the President because they have had supported Dayasiri Jayasekara and Johnston Fernando.

“There are a number of people in the SLFP who are doing nothing to support the Presidential campaign. We are holding discussions with these people as well and hope to gather their support as well,” he said.  (Nabeela Hussain and Sanath Desmond)
