The Transport Ministry has included the monorail transport system in its master plan prepared with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for developing the urban transport system linking the Colombo city with the suburbs, Parliament was informed yesterday.
The plan, which will be implemented in stages from 2015 to 2035, includes both road and rail-based transport systems.
Minister Kumara Welgama gave these details when answering a question asked by UNP MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. The plan includes four monorail lines with one of them running parallel with the High Level Road.
A railway line between Colombo City and the Katunayake Airport has also been proposed. There are four separate projects outlined in the plan to modernize railway lines linking Kalutara,Veyangoda, Negombo and Maradana with Colombo.
The construction of new roads and expressways within the city limit, flyovers, updating traffic signal controls were among the other proposals outlined in the plan.
There are proposals for City traffic safety and management with six project proposals proposed for an environment-friendly transport system in Colombo and the suburbs.
The promotion of vehicles running on natural gas, the introduction of more hybrid cars and electric vehicles, promotion of walking and bicycles and low sulpher diesel programmes are among the proposals.(Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

"SL boy" - Koheda yannae, mallae pol. "check Dubai they have better system than Singapore" What system are you talking about, mono rail or sub way? BTW I did not compare systems around the world I only took Singapore as an example. So read and understand before you comment.

Monorail is a waste. We must follow METRO rail system of Singapore and Malaysia. Hope the authorities will take into account the increased urban population by 2030.

A sub way system will be the best. Take Singapore as an example. How many countries have mono rail as compared to the sub way. This mono rail is going to be a big flop.

The politicians will steal all the money and the public will be left riding the footboards on the ancient busses and trains. This is an old story in Sri Lanka. When something gets done it is only to help the rich and powerful.

I agree that a subway may be a better mean of transport than the monorail, but I believe establishing a subway system would be far more costly than a monorail system.

Monorail system is very good. even with two line it will make a big difference to Colombo traffic. if they build line in 138 Bus route from Kirillawela or beyond till Homagama or beyond (Which was the original bus route) and from Panadura or Beyond till Katunayaka that will take lot of buses out as one can see how many buses are there in these routes 138 route from Kirillewela til homagama (138 for both sides 138/1 138/2 138/3 138/5 138/6 218 514) from panadura till Katunayaka(100 101 187 187/1 188) i think more than 500 buses which make the great deal of traffic in Kandy road Highlevel road Galle raod and Katunayake road

I think the system monorail is more suitable for more congested suburbs of Colombo. Think of subways in Sri Lanka. If safety is concerned Monorail is somewhat suitable. Subways are suitable as well but those shall be maintained properly. There are many countries that use monorail as well.

Given the high number of commuters in Metro Colombo a subway system is ideal provided you can iron out the technical difficulties ie Water sealing of underground stations and the culture of the patrons. Electrifying the existing railroads and boost the number of trains will be an achievable task. Long trains during peak hours and short trains off peak..! and keep dreaming. .
Citizen Monday, 03 November 2014 01:30 PM
Subway is good but expensive to build. Monorail is cheaper.
Chinhaka Monday, 03 November 2014 05:48 PM
Dubai and Singapore have sky trains running on piers. They are not mono, have two rails just like our normal lines. Mono rail is outdated , costly system. Singapore and Bangkok have subway also. They are much difficult to built in Colombo. Best is modern , automatic duel rail lines on columns.

You all talk about mono rally.come an see in villages how people suffer with proper shelter.at least the basic need.so many villages in srilanka without electricity.water and the education facilities.no government has so far paid attention towards these people.before .their are shanties in estate lines about ten people live in a small house.they do not have even basic hygiene facilities.before talk about Dubai and Singapore be concern about our people majority suffering in poverty.giving few bottles of water when their is a drought is not the proper concern and love of my neighbor...
Don Saturday, 08 November 2014 01:46 AM
Even in developed countries like Singapore, Dubai, USA, Germany etc. there are many people without basic facilities such as healthcare, education, electricity etc. It is not something that is there only in Sri Lanka. No country in the world will ever be 100% perfect, as some of these naive people think. They only talk about what is not there, but never appreciate what they have. Monorail is a good thing as it is more cost effective than a subway. Hope it will see the light of day.

What happened to the Colombo Plan? Singapore adopted it and they were successful as no commission were given to contractors.

I was in Japan recently and rode the monorail in Chiba built by the local authority. It is a total loss and a white elephant. A good project for Sri Lanka

Monorail is good. What abut rehabilitation of existing railroads to improve the speed and time? About 225,000 people use daily to come to Colombo from outstations, according to a former GMR.

Hope the Monorail will not end up with Ashok Leyland and Tata trains. We have enough Indian crap doing the roads in SL. Even the airport busses have been changed to crappy Ashok Leyland which do not even have propoer suspension.

Just shows how ignorant some people are. Monorails have closed doors dipshit. And not like intercity busses, automated ones

If the promotion of bicycles is planned you are start right now by telling the police not to harass people for riding on pavements ... especially when it is children under 10!! Right in Kollupitiya I have been yelled at by cops; alternative - ride on the road and get run-over or follow uniflow!!Going green is as much a mentality change as it is a monetary affair - the mentality change needs to start now if the plans are to work by 2035.
