Eight State Medical Faculty Deans who met Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella, have decided to propose that SAITM suspends the admission of students until the completion of the periodic review on its medical degree programme, a statement said.

During the six-month period, the Ministry of Higher Education, the University Grants Commission and Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) and other stakeholders will develop an operational procedure applicable to non-state medical education.

Higher Education Ministry Secretary D.C. Dissanayake said in a statement that it was decided to propose to the SAITM administration to refer students who already completed the degree to undergo a month each on clinical training in Medicine, Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatrics in a state hospital.

In addition they would have to pass a licensing examination conducted by the SLMC. At the meeting, the Deans agreed to discuss the proposals with the SLMC.

State Minister of Higher Education, Mohal Lal Grero, UGC Chairman Prof. Mohan de Silva and Vice Chairman Prof. P.S.M. Gunaratne attended the meeting.

Deans are insane to think SAITM can be trained in GMOA hospitals. Only the legal verdict will get them the internship training they so badly need and are entitled to

very sensible and professional move, You can always increase the quality and standards. Who knows by doing it SAITM may become the best. No one can force the government to close down, That amounts to ransom! Also Most of the Private companies are a huge success as many are holding private and foreign degrees. One must admit that European,American, Australian Degrees from reputed universities are superior. If one could follow the World rankings they will get the answer. Also do not ruin the lives of thousands who are eligible but due to the prevailing systems unable to get admission. Many have better results than the protesters.

    Rohantha Monday, 13 February 2017 10:38 PM

Sure, let the standards be applicable to all universities, whether state or private. And let an independent body evaluate each university for the standards. After all Standards should be same for all universities , whether State or Private

They have already stipulated conditions for SAITM to operate as a approved MC to enable students to achieve MBBS degree to practice in SL hospitals, according to our esteemed Past President His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, as per todays papers at the CM court. If they have not been complied by SAITM, please arrange ASAP.

The country, specially the remote areas, are in crying need for additional doctors to treat the sick; which have been put on the backburner due to strikes of one kind or the other of the hypocrites (tax free cars, Royal College for children and not Pelmadulla central, et all). So we need to hurry up the process. 6 months is too long, unless GOMA will give undertaking, "no more strikes and stop work", for next 6 years, even if cars are not given.

    Mahila Tuesday, 14 February 2017 05:28 AM

Why 6 months for the exercise. If the discrepancy has been identified then just place it on the table and ask SAITM to comply - Maximum 2 weeks to put this on the table to allow the BUSY people to make time to sit down and agree. If not identified as yet, how does one come to the conclusion that the SAITM Medical College training is not good enough?

    Some sanity.

Very good move by the Deans. All good decisions should be taken by the educated people; Not by some of these ministers with out much education. Generally people vote and choose members for the parliment. They are the servants of the people. In Srilanka it is the other way about,as soon as they enter the government people who voted them becomes the servants. I hope the minister concern will lisen to the educated deans and pipe down.

Dean Chief Tuesday, 14 February 2017 12:17 AM

Abolish the parliment also for 6months ...

All this for S.A.I,T.M. students ,while others from so called recognized universities are on strike.

    aravinda Monday, 13 February 2017 11:24 PM

I don't think it should be suspended even a single day. They can review the programme while students proceed their studies. As for the clinical training, students should be allowed to train in any state hospital since patients are not the property of GMOA or the SLMC.

    Dr.Nick Monday, 13 February 2017 11:18 PM

All state hospitals are manned by GMOA sympathisers. These students can have a tough time. Why did the deans wait until the students passed out via DM Android App
