The Central Bus Stand in Pettah is a crowded and busy place at any given time. In addition to passengers are waiting for buses, there are beggars operating in large numbers here. A beggar who often gets into buses in the evenings is a familiar sight to most passengers because he is dumb and acts out using his fingers to seek money for his meals.
A passenger who frequently visits Colombo was recently shocked when he saw a beggar get into his bus on a pair of crutches. This passenger identified the beggar as the dumb man and assumed he must have met with accident forcing him to use crutches. He took out a 20-rupee note sympathizing with the guy but just then the dumb beggar began to talk. “Look at what happened to me…” he started pleading with the gullible passengers. The bewildered passenger put back the 20-rupee note back into his pocket. (Batepola Wijayasiri – Dunagaha)

I am the bugger who acted as that beggar. I was doing research on how to beg and what happens when the people are given a true shock. Thanks for giving me publicity.

The moral of a famous story of the "frost bitten bird lying in a pile of warm cow excreta" comes to mind, keep your "moth shut".
