President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed a separate three-member delegation to represent the country at the forthcoming UNHRC sessions in Geneva as he does not have confidence in the government, MEP MP front liner Dinesh Gunawardana said yesterday. Mr. Gunawaerdana said

President Sirisena was never in agreement with the resolution passed on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council session in September 2015.

The delegation of the president would be led by former Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama to represent Sri Lanka at the ongoing 40th session of the UNHRC in Geneva. The sessions will conclude on March 22. Other members of the committee include former minister Mahinda Samarasinghe and Northern Province Governor Prof. Suren Raghavan.

In response to the Daily Mirror, Mr. Gunawardana said the Presidential Delegation would seek the possibility of withdrawing from the UNHRC resolution passed in 2015 based on incorrect data and added the resolution's stand that 40,000 civilians were killed during the final stage of the Humanitarian Operation was hearsay.

Mr. Gunawardana told media at the Sri Lanka Foundation that the Sri Lankan Government has never taken a concerted effort to counter charges levelled against armed forces at the UNHRC on alleged human rights violations.

The allegations and the resolution came under heavy criticism once again by Baron Lord Naseby last week, he noted.

Lord Naseby has said Sri Lanka is not a country that has to be monitored by the Western countries almost every day and now is the time for closure and to let Sri Lanka stand on its own feet. (Sandun A Jayasekera)

it is dishonest since the president failed to reject the resolution before it was passed. What made him to change of mind

    Sarath Friday, 08 March 2019 05:58 AM

We all remember how MS said he was in favour of the resolution originally! The govt must allow the resolution to continue. Because it is the resolution which says that we can handle our own affairs!!! The moment the resolution is withdrawn- it will leave room for UN to urge an international inquiry!!! This seems to be what MS and MR really want... to create more chaos!!! Really unpatriotic of MS - trying to create problems to get some political mileage. Disgusting!

It shows both stupidity of the President and u. The GOSL is unable to counter the criminal acts committed by the State is bcos their is surmountable proof both inside and outside the UN that those acts happened. Originally the resolution was co-sponsored to avoid direct investigation by UN bodies. Foolish humbug talk.

    Samantha Friday, 08 March 2019 09:06 AM

Dinesh the If you don't know about it, I will tell you the truth. UN or anybody else has no faith in all of you including Sirisena. They are waiting to get you all at once whenever they get chance.Be aware.

Lord Wolfstein Friday, 08 March 2019 09:41 AM

This mentally ill and fragile president should stay out of the government business completely. My cousin Baron Naseby has long lost touch with reality.

    Unchikun Friday, 08 March 2019 09:44 AM

Sorry man, I am not too sure about the delegation to Geneva which the tax payer has to foot. As for me, I have no confidence the president. I think he is gone bananas and is trying make Sri Lanka a Banana Republic with is aimless actions.

Ronnie Bugger Friday, 08 March 2019 10:14 AM

    iqbal Friday, 08 March 2019 10:50 AM

DG thinks he is intellegnt. He little realises that the President does not know what he is doing or talking.
