Steps have been taken to replace elevators in parliament with sophisticated ones following the recommendations of the committee appointed to look into the malfunctioning of an elevator recently, deputy speaker Ananda Kumarasiri informed parliament today.

He told parliament that the relevant company which looked into the defective elevator had recommended that the elevators are 36 years old and should be replaced with sophisticated ones, as the built-in microchip failed to send signals to the system to sound an overload alarm.

It also revealed that the elevator should not have functioned in such a situation but it had gone to some distance and halted.

About 12 MPs were trapped inside an elevator car due to its malfunctioning on February 7.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

The elevator was faulty and must be replaced with a new one that will make these parliamentarians perish inside it.

    Elevate Thursday, 21 February 2019 09:04 AM

What is needed is an elevator that will elevate the parliamentarians either upwards or downwards so that we will not see them again.

The degree of sophistication is useless if the no-level qualified bums are unable to use it properly.

    ConcernedCitizen Thursday, 21 February 2019 04:53 AM

I am sure that the either the limit of number of passengers or limit of weight is mentioned in the lift car. Our parliament morons would have not read this! Now they want to have high tech elevators as though they need to climb 50 floors.

    Who is making money?

sophisticated ? WHAT TO YOU MEAN Thursday, 21 February 2019 07:36 AM

Lifts 36 years old no doubt will not have the modern day safety features etc. We cannot understand what these "sophisticated ones" are. You mean "bullet proof" and with the lift mechanism on top built into a sealed compartment. Are you trying to fool the public for obtaining a high quote with high percentages under the table. !

    mnsmart Thursday, 21 February 2019 07:39 AM

Even the elevators are fed-up with these guys

    Reason Thursday, 21 February 2019 08:34 AM

Parliamentarians becoming huge in size due to their luxury life. So; they need sophisticated elevators.

Lord Wolfstein Thursday, 21 February 2019 08:38 AM

Better these fat MP's take the steps. In this way they can loose some pounds and become healthier.

Ronnie Bugger Thursday, 21 February 2019 08:47 AM

Things have to be replaced with age and time but what happened at the time was that 12 'donkeys' including 1 hippopotamus was too much to hold, that why.

    Karu Thursday, 21 February 2019 08:48 AM

Can't the microchip be replaced. We still see Minor 1000s on our roads.

    BuffaloaCitizen Thursday, 21 February 2019 09:30 AM

Day in and day out the public face inconveniences on the road without any respite whatsoever. However, just one incident concerning a group of ignorant monkeys who overloaded the lift causing it to halt has caused a priority of expensive proportions also to be paid the those same citizens facing all the inconvenience of life every hour.

How many floors to go up and off course all of them must go down. Replace old one which can carry all of them straight away to hell . All Sri lankans will be happy with the supplier/s immaterial of cost.

    Lalu Thursday, 21 February 2019 11:05 AM

All these Karuma Karayos are scared for their lives after the lift failure in the Casino.

    angel Thursday, 21 February 2019 11:25 AM

Very prompt action taken, as always, by the members of Parliament! Well done! It shows that the welfare of the country is always in your heart and given first preference! So Sri Lankan!

may I suggest a better cheaper solution. Replace these parliamentarians

    suresh Thursday, 21 February 2019 01:45 PM

elevator failed once, it is replaced. But why do these eternally failed parliamentarians keep representing us

KUMAR SHANTHI Thursday, 21 February 2019 01:59 PM

Those SOBs were dead scared when the lift got stuck. one fellow was saying it might fall. What a waste of money to replace the lifts. A new designed lift has to be installed to take more than two of those fat bsteds. Hope we could replace these 225 bsteds instead of the lifts.

    m.a.iqbal Thursday, 21 February 2019 01:59 PM

Who is paying for this. Some of the clowns dont deserve these facilities. Get these people walk the stairs. Let the free food eaten in parliament on public cost digest.
