The First contacts of COVID-19 infected patients will be placed under home quarantine from today onwards, Army Commander Shavendra Silva said.

“Although the first contacts of the COVID-19 infected patients were earlier sent for quarantine centres, such positive patients will no longer be sent for quarantine centres but placed under home quarantine,” he said.

Therefore, the Army Commander requested such patients to remain indoors without any interactions with other persons.

This new practice came into effect following the instruction of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after reviewing the quarantine process currently in place in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, he said they would not be hesitant to lift the curfew in the areas where it is already enforced, if the risk of Covid-19 in those areas would be lessened. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

This can be the turning point. Our success was mostly attributed to the government backed quarantine.

    Noname Monday, 26 October 2020 06:22 PM

Can you please extend the same curtesy to people returning from overseas and open the airport at least now?

    Today's Man Monday, 26 October 2020 06:35 PM

That is a great decision. At last your brains are working.

Sri Lanka Monday, 26 October 2020 06:36 PM

Quarantine centers full. This country is fooling everybody. We are all to be infected as in Europe. This island is going to sunk.

    Chris Monday, 26 October 2020 06:44 PM

Finally some sanity. Looks like centres are getting overwhelmed.

Michael Ranasinghe Monday, 26 October 2020 07:10 PM

Hope you recall how you ridiculed western countries who had requested first contacts to self quarantine at home .. With just over 7k patients our hospitals cannot cope but the Lankan Island mentality is to mock others who ironically have the resources to even cater to 100k patients ..

    Ananda Monday, 26 October 2020 07:40 PM

What are the pros and cons of this new decision ? Main reason could be the enormous saving !

GON BOOR POL GONA Monday, 26 October 2020 07:59 PM

I guess that this is due to heavy loads of patients in govt hospitals. Likewise 14-day quarantine period for returning people must also be made at homebased. BUT ONE THING IS to ensure these ludicrous guys remain at homes without going out as well as taking visitors in.

Mohamed Thahir Monday, 26 October 2020 08:19 PM

Those who are returning from abroad are subjected to two PCR tests at the departure and arrival. And if the test results are found' to be Negstive ' then the authorities shall consider to allow for the same home Quarantine procedure without hotel or government quarantine centres. His Excellancy the President, for your kind consideration please

    Mifaz Monday, 26 October 2020 08:20 PM

    Good decision.

    Bandara Monday, 26 October 2020 08:28 PM

Now no need to give food three times a day.

    anver Monday, 26 October 2020 08:35 PM

makes sense this is new in srilanka but in practice all around the world, finally woken up

Ammagei Puthek Monday, 26 October 2020 08:38 PM

He's realizing only now that anything Government is a FAILURE! Why don't you throw everyone of these imbeciles like the Army did in Thailand.

    lal Monday, 26 October 2020 08:44 PM

Our earlier method of containing the decease delayed the inevitable. Let us face the harsh reality with knowledge and courage.

Pramod Fernando Monday, 26 October 2020 08:47 PM

Learn to live with Covid is the only thing left right now. Hence an awareness programme to keep the virus at bay should be implemented. For example, how to handle money safely should be considered as the number one priority.

    DHA Monday, 26 October 2020 08:48 PM

Indeed a welcoming news ! The amount of insults the society gives to the quarantined when they return is heartbreaking specially by the media ! But ensure the ones quarantined follow the rules properly otherwise it will be a disaster !

Antony Jude Monday, 26 October 2020 08:49 PM

Quarantine centres in the North and East are full now. Gota doesn't want to open any quarantine centres in the South. That is why he made this decision.

    Saranga W Monday, 26 October 2020 08:59 PM

Probably overwhelmed by the sheer number

Premalal. Perera Monday, 26 October 2020 09:29 PM

This is the first sane decision this government has taken with regards to Covid. Transportation en mass is the worst option because if one is infected then the whole bus load will get infected by the end of the journey.

    G abe Monday, 26 October 2020 10:29 PM

Needs to be enforced properly, people are selfish and dumb,

    Ranaweera Monday, 26 October 2020 10:42 PM

No country can afford to put many people under government quarantine centers for a long time. So that is why many countries have adopted practices of self quarantine at home. The perfect example was when the wife of Canadian prime minister tested positive, she was asked to self isolate at home. The same treatment for mist people. So Sri Lanka was sending people to quarantine centers because the numbers were small. Now with all the centers being full, some people will have to stay at home. Definitely this will not work very well in Sri Lanka due to selfish nature and they are likely to break the quarantine law and roam around the nebhourhood.

    Ali Monday, 26 October 2020 10:52 PM

Finally Sri Lanka is moving forward. Follow Maldives. Most of thier hotels, resorts and guest houses are getting full

Adam Speak Monday, 26 October 2020 11:25 PM

That's a very good news. In order to avoid quarantine violations at home they can be tagged with an Electronic Monitoring Bracelet with some strict warnings

Ranjan Gurusighe Tuesday, 27 October 2020 12:06 AM

Do you think the infected people will remain indoor? This will be a disaster. Politicians are not the public health experts to decide the quarantine procedures

Sushena Ranatunga Tuesday, 27 October 2020 12:52 AM

    This is a wise decision.
