A one-and-a-half-month-old infant was killed and two others were rescued after a five-storey building collapsed on to another building at Buwelikada in Kandy this morning.
Police said search operations are underway to find the parents of the baby believed to be trapped under the debris.
They said five persons were at the building at the time of the incident and three individuals including the baby were rescued and admitted to the Kandy General Hospital.
The infant has succumbed to its injuries.

By the photos itself shows it is illegal construction and wondering why it didn't come down early. There are so many such constructions in Kandy which needs immediate removal.

Appears to be a multi-faceted problem. First, the rebars at the base of the perimeter columns passing through floor are just stubs projecting a few inches only above. These rebars must be longer (splice length) and tied to the column rebars. Second, was this a design error or was the contractor cutting corners? Third, are building plans reviewed by qualified plan reviewers? Fourth, does the municipality require periodic inspections during construction? This is not the totality of the problem but are the key ones.

In developed countries there are building permits and a building police. In Sri Lanka there is only corruption in the construction area.

The construction horde is Korupt. As long as the clan has said that, nothing will change.

Anyone who livea in kandy knows how corrupt the authorities are. Anything can be built anywhere by bribing the authorities

Showoff development by taking huge loans to build highways, ports, airports have other effects too other than massive loan repayments with interest. These are punishments by nature. Do you think building highways, ports and airports by massive loans is actual development? That's to get votes in the next election. We will have more natural disasters in the next decade.

I have seen extremely dangerous looking buildings in Kandy built on mountain slopes. The weight of the slab is on tiny sticks like concrete pillars. Such buildings are plenty on Rajapihilla Mawatha.

That baby's life and perhaps many more are the cost of construction corruption. Kandy used to be a beautiful city, but it is so ugly now because of these ugly, illegal buildings.

Everytime I saw frighteningly erected structures on stilts (sticks) bright down from Buwelikada to Tennekumbura on mountain slopes, I have predicted the inevitable. The scum who authorised such at the Municipality certainly are inhuman. The people who bribed them risking lives are fools no end.

President should ask Auditor General to do an audit of these activities.

I posted my comments as an engineer, but DM does not want to post it. It was only a factual analysis. Nothing else. Puzzling but another illustration of how backwards we are, not given to wanting to understand the roots of any problem. Yes, Kandy the beautiful city as I knew it has lost its charm. Rather sad a baby’s life had to be the sacrifice in the name of development, greed aided by corruption.

Honest people have taken a back seat or left the country. The most important thing to happen should be for the country to re engage those who can do an honest job.

We don’t have law and order in our country. Any thing is possible!
