The US sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka at the 19 session of the UNHRC in Geneva was adopted short while ago with 24 countries voting for & 15 against 8 abstained
India voted in favour of a resolution backed by the United States at the UNHCR sessions conducted today. The UN's top human rights body has passed a resolution calling on Sri Lanka to properly investigate alleged war crimes during its 26-year conflict with the Tamil Tigers.
Sri Lanka and its allies on the 47-member council had fiercely resisted the resolution saying it unduly interfered in the country's domestic affairs and could hinder its reconciliation process.
But backers, such as the United States, the European Union and India, say credible probes into alleged crimes committed by both sides are an important step for justice and equality in post-conflict Sri Lanka.
China however backed Sri Lanka and opposed the proposed UN resolution.
Bangladesh has voted against the resolution on Sri Lanka, saying that there is a disturbing selectivity when deciding which countries to bring resolutions against. It however called on the government to implement the recommendations made by the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission. Mexico has supported the resolution.
China has said that the resolution against Sri Lanka are contrary to the interests of the UN charter and called on all members of the council to vote against it. The Chinese delegate said that the resolution was a blatant violation of Sri Lanka’s rights as a sovereign nation, and amounted to interference in the domestic affairs of the country. Speaking immediately afterwards, the Maldives also voted against the resolution saying that while it supported accountability as a concept, it felt Sri Lanka had not been given enough time to implement the recommendations of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Committee. Indonesia has also voted against the resolution.
Thailand praises Sri Lankan efforts at reconciliation and votes against the resolution. The Philippines and Nigeria have also voted against the resolution. Philippines said that they did not support resolutions targeted at certain countries, particularly those just coming out of a post war situation.
Russia says that outside intervention in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka would be counter productive and says they take the view that the country situations may be considered in the council only with the agreement of the country concerned. Ecuador also voted against the resolution.
Uruguay has voted for the resolution and asked the Sri Lankan government to also look into the issues of forced disappearances and the harassment and abduction of Human Rights defenders in the country.
Kirghystan has abstained on the basis that the Sri Lankan government has not had enough time to implement the resolutions of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission.
Cuba has said that the draft resolution against Sri Lanka smacked of hypocrisy and double standards, particularly by countries who were sponsoring the initiative. In a strongly worded speech, the Cuban delegate said that if the US and EU were asking for an investigation in Sri Lanka, why they did not demand a similar investigation into civilian deaths in the NATO sponsored campaign in Libya, and the US war in Iraq. They said they were a friend of Sri Lanka and could not support the resolution.
The US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka is currently up for debate in the United Nations Human Rights Convention in Sri Lanka. Speaking at the council debate, Sri Lanka said it was vehemently opposed to the resolution in its current form. The Sri lankan delegate said, “The resolution runs counter to the international law principle that local remedies should be exhausted”. He added that the resolution by UNHRC would allow the LTTE to resume under the protection of the Council.

Back stabbing India!! They created the LTTE, protected Prabhakaran twice, waited till thousands of people die, and now Sri Lanka is made the guilty party. None of this would not have happened if they did not create a monster like the LTTE. But India is now clean and asking us to clean up our act. Now I can underatand why Pakistanis hate India so much.

All the countries which Import Sri Lankan products and keep our manufacturing plants working with jobs for hundreds of thousands of people with tariff concessions have voted against us- there is no point calling them enemies. Our friends in reality have told us that there is a lot of work to do by ourselves for the sake of national unity and human rights. This is not interference buy advise from those who support us with MONEY

Current regime never acted with transparency nor accountability. They have never been true patriots. True patriots are those who love the society, and not the ones who lead the society to a slow distruction and death (see the number of open crimes that take place in SL now) like the present rulers do in the disguise of patriotism.
Analysing the whole scenario, it is the current rulers who gave enough opportunities for Imperialism to encroach our land. They are dirty enough even to use this as an opportunity to keep in power.
Pray that somebody will step forward to save the country from the present disastrous rulers and then from the imperials.

Please can someone tell me what is wrong with this resolution. My understanding is, International Community want SL to implement the LLRC recommendations. Why are we so upset about it ? Anything wrong with implementing them ? Have we forgotten about the findings, recomandations and reports from various inquires and commissions and of course Mervin's inquiries. What happened to those reports and findings ? Any action taken by the government ? King Rajapakse was ready to send the LLRC report down the same way. International Community is not as oblivious as Rajapakse & co think. We need to maintain law and order in our country, not Rajapakse's brain washing, bribery, intimidation and terror.

Sincere suggestion to lankans. Look at India
India has 50 Major languages. Every state has its own language, culture, So it came up with a federal structure based on language and each state has a state govt, Chief minister and governor and a common central govt. Why are sirilanka follow this. You can have 2 states one for tamils and one for sinhalese and a common central govt. This solution will work. But you need to be bold.

sri lanka is an small island it is 60 times lesser than ur country even ur tamil nadu is clode to sri lanka land capacity. so if u are a well educated man just ask from ur self whether it is possible to devide a small country in to two parts? and since u are an indian u might not that much aware of sri lanka there is no problems between tamils and sinhalese we are livels here peacefully .. so before making a comment specially regarding a country u may go to that land and study the situation and after that u can make a good decision on that. if sri lanka seperated in to two parts whole economy and culture and lots of things will be collapse it will effect for sri lankan it means for sinhalese, tamils ,muslims , burgers, malay and so on..SO what is the purpose of deviding a country in to peices if there is no use of doing that for the people who are living in that country..

So, how about Switzerland, a small country has 26 states with own police and all. only finance and military with central. when u divide as states, administration power will increase, by that could develop more, So, devide it as 9 states, give the rights, police, land rights, have the finance and military with central.
Ashan Thursday, 22 March 2012 14:13
Then What about the muslims?? another state ?? is it?? India is 60 times larger than SL. Think of it.. And there aren't any issue to the Tamil people living in sri lanka because of tamil. the problems they faced with poverty and all are common to all.

Now MR's Govt. is aware of the actual supportive actions of real and assumed friends of Sri Lanka, it should rethink with whom Sri Lanka should do business the future. Very specially India supporting the US should be an eye opener. To consider projects like, Oil exploration around Mannar, Renovation of Northern Railway line from Madawachchi to KKS, the fuel sales outlets by foreign firms, and other pending projects. It is better to know your friends and keep them where they are but deal with real friends who helped Sri Lanka at the time of need without bending over for a FIST full of Dollars.
