Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa addressing the gathering
By Susil Premalal
Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa is planning to dedicate leading sports stadiums in the country to various national sports associations.
As a pilot project, the Dadella Sports Complex in Galle has been handed over to the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVB).
Under this plan the Sports Minister wants to dedicate the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium to the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool to the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union, the Jayathilaka Sports Stadium in Nawalapitiya to Sri Lanka Rugby and the Aluvihare Stadium in Matale to the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation, an official of the Sports Ministry told the Daily Mirror.
Although the stadiums would be handed over to the respective federations, the maintenance of the venues will be the responsibility of the Sports Ministry. A joint coordination committee comprising stadium officials and officials of the respective federations will be formed in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Sports Minister headed a strong delegation in October 17 to inspect the refurbishment being carried out at the Dadella Sports Complex.
He instructed officials to construct a Beach Volleyball court and a pitch to play Beach Football closer to the sea area adjoining the sports complex which contains an indoor and outdoor playground in addition to a swimming pool.
