Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 Cricket Tournament which was scheduled to begin on August 8 has been pushed back.

One of the primary reasons for the two week postponement was the government's decision to delay the re-opening of the Bandaranaike International Airport to incoming travellers.

"Yes, it is postponed," Ravin Wickramaratne, Vice-President of SLC and in-charge of the LPL told the Daily Mirror yesterday.

There was some speculation that it would be postponed indefinitely but Wickramaratne clarified that at present it is only postponed for two weeks.

"We are hoping to launch the LPL on August 21 subject to the government sanction," he added.

The availability of the foreign players and the delay in reopening the airports for the resumption of flights could decide the fate of the LPL.
