The year 1996 was when Sri Lanka officially announced themselves on the international cricket stage, with possibly the greatest underdog story in the history of the sport, beating Australia in the final of the World Cup. Sri Lanka, who were co-hosting the tournament with India and Pakistan, received walkovers from Australia and West Indies due to safety fears, which put them on top of Group A.
