The leaders of the pro-Punchi Dasa backbencher-group had asked all fellow-members to attend the recent Badulla public rally. However, reports say that some of them had given this event the miss.

Those who kept away had feared possible repercussions in case the leader named another hopeful after coming to an understanding with Punchi Dasa.

“It is possible that Punchi Dasa may make up with the leader later, but it is we who will have to face the music,” had been the view they had shared. So, they had decided to say ‘aye’ for Punchi Dasa raising both hands at any party’s official forum but not appear on any stage to indicate their support for him until the latter was officially named as the party candidate for the big poll.

Meanwhile, the swarthy one of bond fame – the arch-rival of Punchi Dasa is said to be trying his best to win over the ‘play-it-safe’ backbenchers, they say.
