It is learnt that 10 train engines imported at a cost of Rs. 1,200 million from India have been removed from operation due to their excessive weight which makes them prone to accidents.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Transport said that each of these engines weighed 120 tonnes whereas the present railway track could bear only an engine weighing 80 tonnes.
He added that two of the engines imported from India had been deployed but both had derailed causing severe damage to the track and the engines. The authorities of the railway technical division was of the view that these accidents occurred due to the excessive weight of the engines.
He pointed out that the Indian engines were now idling in the railway yard after spending a colossal amount on them.
