Eight nabbed in Kalpitiya with beedi leaves smuggled from India

Eight suspects had been arrested with a stock of 1,150 kilos of beedi leaves smuggled from India by Kalpitiya Police during a raid at the Kappaladiya Beach when it was being unloaded, the Police said.


“Under interrogation, the suspects stated that the trade value of the stock of beedi leaves was more than Rs 8 million,” a Police Spokesman said.


A fisheries boat and two lorries used by the racketeers had also been seized during the raid.


The Police said four of the suspects were from the Galewela area and other from Kandakaduwa in Kalpitiya.
IP Jayawickrema, SI Perera. PCs 69749 Priya Shantha, 92605 Buddhika, 68434 Prematilleka, and 17795 Bandara carried out the raid on the direction of OIC Kalpitiya Police CI Jayampathi Bandara.
