A five-year-old boy from Kent, UK was left fighting for his life after developing a rare condition triggered by Covid-19. Initial symptoms were high fever and a stomach pain. But he was transferred to the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London and diagnosed with Paediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (Pims). Pims is caused when a child’s immune system fights off coronavirus but then over-reacts to affect other parts of their body.

It occurs in less than 0.5% of children who get Covid and the symptoms are very similar to other life-threatening conditions like sepsis or meningitis.
