From childhood, being brought up as a Buddhist, I have been taught that nothing is fixed or permanent, that change is always possible and the path to enlightenment is through the practice and development of morality, meditation and wisdom. Over the years I have come to believe that life is both endless and subject to impermanence, suffering and uncertainty.

The above sums up all the great plans my dear friend Ranil, Shiromal and Ayoma had made for me to celebrate my becoming a senior citizen in a foreign land. All plans had to be cancelled owing to the current pandemic and, instead, they arranged to give me an equally special treat at Jetwing’s newest hotel, The Gallery in Kandy.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the General Manager of the Hotel, Dilip Kumar, with the traditional Ayubowan. Our group felt at home already. The rooms were amazing, and interiors well done.  The entire Hotel was designed by renowned architect Philip Weeraratne. The celebrations that had been planned were endless surprises, which were perfect, and I could not have asked for a better way to embark into senior citizenry.

The additional plus point was the young Executive Chef, Pathum Mihiran, who has a great passion for cooking.  He created the most extraordinary meals, using Jetwing’s motto of using only locally sourced produce.  Pathum has many years of experience in the Maldives and having the privilege of working with many Michelin star chefs had learned all that he could from them. His natural flair and love for cooking was obvious in all the meals he prepared for us. Saman, the Head Butler and the rest of the Hotel’s team were amazingly efficient. All we could say was that it was a perfect holiday as well as a fabulous way to celebrate my 60th birthday.

The Kingdom of Kandy was an independent monarchy of Sri Lanka founded in the late 15th century and remained in existence until the early 19th century and is the home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth. The Gallery in Kandy is the latest addition to the Jetwing family of hotels, where they offer a spiritual and relaxing vacation surrounded by the luxuries and comforts one expects. The Hotel is nestled between the stunning mountains and hidden waterfalls of the Hanthane and Matale mountain ranges.

It is in the idyllic village of Gurudeniya by the waters of the Mahaweli.

The hotel offers a personalised butler service, spa facilities, a fabulous pool, and many modern facilities come together for an unforgettable personalized service.

One expects nothing less from Jetwing, which is a family owned hospitality industry over a few decades now, having thirty unique properties all over the island, that haveS been inspired and driven by values of passion, tenacity, humility and integrity instilled by its late Chairman, Mr Herbert Cooray. Jetwing assures you that they are doing everything possible to comply with the best practices put forth by the Government and the public health authorities across the globe to actively prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Gallery in Kandy is certainly a must for any person looking for a serene and relaxing break.
