The Eastern Province is bracing for twofold challenges in prevention of the spread of COVID-19 while sheltering people displaced by the adverse weather conditions developing in the area, Governor Anuradha Yahampath said.

The Province was experiencing heavy and very heavy rain yesterday. The adverse weather condition has been triggered by the cyclonic development in the Bay of Bengal.

Ms. Yahampath told Daily Mirror the schools in the area were closed for three days because of the cyclone which was to enter Sri Lanka through the eastern coast.

“We are now gathering information from the divisional authorities on the number of people already hit. We have to find shelter for them in a manner that will not leave room for an uptick of COVID-19 cases,” she said.

COVID-19 is spreading in some spots of the province such as Kalmunai and Akkaraipattu.

“We will assign a classroom for each displaced family. We won’t accommodate all the affected families in a single hall,” he said.
