Threat of squall persists

Flood threat in Kalutara, Ratnapura ease

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) yesterday said threats of heavy showers and high winds have not passed yet though the flood threat in Kalutara and Ratnapura Districts have declined.   

 DMC Spokesman Pradeep Kodippily told Daily Mirror that heavy rainfalls exceeding 100 mm are likely in Central, Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts during the coming days. Showers or thundershowers expected also in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces.  “There is a possibility for sudden increase of wind speed up to 60 km/h over the island particularly in Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, North-Central, North-western, Northern and Central provinces and in Trincomalee district,” Mr. Kodippily said.    

“There is a high possibility for sudden increase of wind speed up to (70-80) kmph and seas can be very rough in the areas extending from Pottuvil to Trincomalee via Hambantota, Colombo, Puttalam and Kankesanturai,” he added. Fishermen have been warned to be vigilant in this regard.  Meanwhile, flood situation in Ratnapura remained the same though the water level of Kalu Ganga was receding as of yesterday. Water level in the Kalu Ganga was rising in Millakanda was also rising as of last afternoon.
