UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam in a letter addressed to Chairman of the Election Commission had requested him to stop the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) from using green as its party colours.

“UNP in its constitution has adopted green as its official colour. This is clearly stated in the section 1.2 of the party constitution. However, SJB seemed to be using green as its colour despite adopting that its colour would be blue as per its constitution. This shows that SJB clearly uses green to inflict an adverse effect on UNP. Therefore, we urge you to look into the matter and clear everything,” Mr. Kariyawasam said in its letter dated July 8, 2020. When inquired by the Daily Mirror, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said no party could claim a colour. “What matters to a political party is its symbol, not the colour,” he said.
