Seventy seven underage mothers have been reported in the Moratuwa area last year, the Moratuwa Medical officer of Health Ms M.M. Thilakarathne said.

Fifty four of these mothers of the ages between 13 and 15 had been reported from Angulana area and during the past six months there had been nearly 30 under aged girls who had conceived.

She attributes these phenomena to early termination of schooling, absence of parental care, family background, love affairs and sexual curiosity. Despite education being made to create awareness among the under aged mothers and conducting of programmes to improve nourishment there is a tendency by these under aged mothers avoiding these programmes.
The Moratuwa MOH made these observations at the monthly meeting of the Moratuwa Municipal Council. Council member Sajith Duminda Peiris stated that the absence of sexual education and the family background are the reasons for this situation. He also stressed that parents getting involved in drug offences and girls getting involved in love affairs at a very young age have also contributed to this situation.
