When Sri Lankan leaders appoint officials based on the requirement of the people of its country, they can’t take into consideration the choices of other countries including the US and Canada, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday said.

Addressing a news briefing held at the SLPP office, MP C. B. Ratnayake said Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva, who was appointed as the Army Commander, contributed immensely and brought an end to the 30-year long war which ravaged the country.

“We got a new Army Commander and the diaspora, Sumanthiran and the US are hurt. Why would the US feel hurt when we appoint a war hero like Shavendra as the army commander? The remote controller to destabilise Sri Lanka lies in the hands of the west, but our people are well aware of it,” he said.
