Removal of CCTV cameras 2-year suspension for 25 Kelaniya Uni students

The 25 Kelaniya University undergraduates allegedly involved in the removal of the newly-installed CCTV cameras from its premises were suspended for two years from yesterday, the University’s Communication and Media Unit said.  

University Director and Senior Lecturer Wijayananda Rupasinghe said the decision was taken by the University Administration at a meeting of the disciplinary committee and that students were barred from entering the Dalugama premises of the university from tomorrow.   


The Administration announced the close of the Academic year 2017/2018 from today and directed all students to leave the university premises including the hostels before 8.00 a.m.   
It said the weekend post-graduate Diploma courses, Diploma courses, certificate course and other courses and examinations have been suspended until further notice and that the investigations would continue the camera system would be restored as soon as possible.   


Police said 16 students including a monk were arrested by the Kiribathgoda Police on Thursday and later 12 students were released on police bail while four of them were remanded till March 3.   


They were charged under the Public Property Act and produced in the Mahara Magistrate’s Court.
