TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran, who had appeared for convicted MP Ranjan Ramanayake, said yesterday that MP Ramanayake could make one appeal in terms of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act and said the appeal would be made in due course.

He told Parliament that claims made by some people that MP Ramanayake could not appeal against his verdict was not true.
The MP said Sri Lanka has enacted the ICCPR Act which said that there must be one appeal for any criminal conviction

He said Sri Lanka had not enacted a law for contempt of court and pointed out that steps should be taken to enact a law for contempt of court in parliament.
