UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will not come to Parliament through the national list slot as he will resign from the party leadership in the near future, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said over the weekend.

Mr. Wijewardene came up with this information in response to a question raised by the journalists as to whether Mr. Wickremesinghe would be appointed to Parliament through the national list.

“Many have requested him to go to Parliament through the national list. However, he had refused as he will be stepping down from the leadership in the near future. It will be better if remains as an advisor to the party. His knowledge and experience will be needed to revive the country’s economy,” Mr. Wijewardene said.
Asked whether he would be appointed as an MP through the national list, Mr. Wijewardene said he will not. “I believe that one should be elected to Parliament rather than getting appointed. Therefore, I don’t think he will go to Parliament through the national list,” he said.

However, Mr. Wijewardene said UNP will be appointing someone to Parliament through the national list.
Meanwhile, UNP former MP Palitha Range Bandara who held a press conference yesterday said some SJB MPs will have to wave white flags and offer a truce with the UNP as they would become helpless given the current situation of their party.

“Some of SJB Members proved that they have got into a deal with the government and that is why eight members voted in favour of 20th Amendment,” he said.
