Investigations are underway into the fire that broke out at former minister Arumugam Thondaman’s Bungalow at the Ramboda Vavanton Estate in Kothmale.

Police said the fire broke out early yesterday morning destroying a part of the bungalow including the antique furniture it contained.
The cause of the fire is still not known. Police said there was only a watchman at the bungalow at the time of the fire and the fire brigades from the Nuwara Eliya and the Hatton-Dickoya Municipal Councils managed to douse the fire.

Former minister Saumyamoorthy Thondaman, the founder of the Ceylon Workers Congress, had bought and lived in this bungalow during his early days into politics and the late Arumugam Thondaman had lived there for a while after Thondaman senior’s death.
