Presidential Candidates should vow to eradicate drug menace - President

President Mahithripala Sirisena said yesterday in Dimbulagala, Polonnaruwa that the presidential candidates should vow to eradicate drug menace and implement capital punishment for those convicted of offences related to narcotics.  

 He made such remarks at the meeting of handing over the model villages of Kotaragala, Disalagama and Jeewahaththagama constructed in Dimbulagala Divisional Secretarial Division by National Housing Authority directed by the Ministry of Housing and Cultural Affairs. Minister Sajith Premadasa who is trying to be the presidential candidate of the United National Party(UNP) was also present at the event.   


The President said tough laws should be introduced in the country to control organized criminal activities, rapes , child abuses and drug smuggling and peddling. He said he even sanctioned the implementation of capital punishment on some convicts, but the top rung leaders of both the government and the opposition moved the court against it.
