Police nab over 14,000 curfew violators during last 16 days

A total of 14,238 individuals who violated the strict curfew regulations imposed over the COVID-19 pandemic over the past 16 days had been taken into custody by the police from countrywide locations.   

Police Headquarters said last night about 552 violators had been nabbed throughout the country from within the period 12 noon to 6.00 p.m. yesterday.   


The police have also seized 140 vehicles being used during this period when the curfew was in effect.   
As a result a total of 3,563 vehicles which had been used by the violators during the 16-day period commencing from 6.00 p.m. on March 20, when the curfew was first imposed countrywide until 6.00 p.m. yesterday.   
Head of Police Legal Division DIG Ajith Rohana said the law will be imposed strictly on these curfew violators as they will not be granted police bail.   


All the seized vehicles will also be detained in police custody until the pandemic situation returns to normalcy, the DIG warned.
