Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando, during a recent inspection tour of the Colombo Port, had requested the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) to halt improper constructions at the Colombo Port Premises, as some construction work obstructs the internal drainage system.

  • The Minister ordered officials of the SLPA to submit a detailed report on the construction companies  working within the Port

The Minister ordered relevant officials of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) to submit a detailed report on the construction companies working within the Port, especially with regard to whether these companies had honoured the respective agreements that had been signed with SLPA.  During the visit the Minister had also been informed that the internal drainage system of the Colombo port overflows even during light showers causing the road system to submerge, thereby hindering the port activities. Accordingly, it was decided to halt improper constructions being carried out by companies, blocking the flow of water. The Minister advised SLPA Managing Director Captain Athula Hewawitharana and other officials to submit a report and to regulate constructions with the direct intervention of the SLPA.
