Let’s not talk of elections now : Cardinal

• It is not correct to think of political power at a time when the country is facing a crisis

It is not advisable to make inquiries whether it is possible to hold general elections at a time when the country plunged into a great crisis brought on by COVID-19, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said yesterday.  

“Some are looking into whether it is possible to hold the election. It is not correct to think of political power at a time when the country is facing a crisis” he said during his Sunday sermon. 

 
There were dictators in this world from time to time. There was Napoleon Bonaparte and Hitler who thought they could rule their respective countries forever. There were some in Sri Lanka as well who could hold on to power. Where are they today?” he questioned. 

 
Also Cardinal Ranjith said people should not violate curfew and come out of their houses. “Selfishness, individualism and minimalism has become the order of the day today. People defy laws and do things according to their own will without obeying the laws. Therefore we urge everyone to abide with the law and not to come out of their homes violating curfew,” he said.
