If the Criminal Investigation Department and the Bribery Commission failed to arrest the brother of the leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress and former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen in the next few days, he would take legal action against the CID and the Bribery Commission, joint opposition stalwart S.B.Dissanayaka threatened yesterday.
Several MPs and Buddhist monks have lodged complaints against the brother of Bathiudeen on alleged bribery and corruption and murders but the CID and the Bribery Commission had ignored all of them and failed to arrest him, Mr. Dissanayaka charged.
His brother Rifkhan Bathiudeen has been suspected of the killing of a youth using a poisonous serpent and the Bathiudeens had prevented a postmortem on the sudden death of the youth, Mr. Dissanayaka further alleged.
“The Police and the Army recorded statements from him for alleged association with Muslim religious fundamentalist terrorists, illegal land grab and the murder of this youth. But no action has so far been taken or to arrest him. I will take legal action against the CID and the Bribery Commission if Rifkhan was not arrested in the next two weeks,” Mr. Dissanayaka vowed.
Mr. Dissanayaka told the media that Bathiudeen family has deeds of 6,000 land plots acquired by illegal means and also he has evidence to prove that he and his brother associated with Muslim extremist terrorists.
Mr. Dissanayaka said he would complain shortly to President Maithripala Sirisena, Defence Minister, the CID and the Bribery Commission once again against Mr. Bathiudeen and added that he has a glossy file with reports of various crimes and corruptions allegedly committed by Mr. Bathiudeen.
Mr. Dissanayaka lamented the government was in a move to destroy the Samurdhi Movement he started as the Samurdhi Minister under the Rajapaksa regime and said the government was using the Rs. 200 billion Samurdhi fund for the UNP’s election propaganda.
“Samurdhi’ was introduced to empower low income families after studying similar projects in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Korea and Israel. It is true to say that it was politicized during the Rajapaksa rule but was a huge blessing to low income families. Today, priority has been given to party politics and new Samurdhi beneficiaries are chosen at Sirikotha by UNP members. In the past the list of Samurdhi recipients is prepared by the Divisional Secretary, Grama Niladari and Samurdhi officer. This is a tragedy. I plead with the government not to destroy Samurdhi Movement launched to eradicate poverty in the country”, he said.
Commenting on the No Confidence Motion against the government defeated on Thursday, Mr. Dissanayaka said the JVP brought the NCM to strengthen the government. “It was a political perversity of the JVP. The JVP wanted to save the government from current problems and they did it,” Mr. Dissanayaka charged. On the forthcoming Presidential poll, he said President Maithripala Sirisena is determined not to split the votes against the UNP at the Presidential poll. Pics by Varuna Wanniarachchi.
