EU envoy discusses new technology to minimise negative effects on agriculture

Ambassador of the EU to Sri Lanka and Maldives Mr.Denis Chaibi and Minister Councillor - Head of Cooperation Mr.Frank Hess called on Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera Environment to discuss the application of technology to minimise the negative effect of climate on agriculture development. 

The main focus of this discussion was on the introduction of new technology to prevent the effect of drought and water scarcity which is a major factor affecting the people of the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Discussions also focused on rural development through the improvement of transportation, electricity.  Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, pointed out that the government has launched a sustainable environmental programme to regulate plastics and polythene use in Sri Lanka as the haphazard disposal of them has clogged and polluted waterways. 


He also said that a green city project has been launched and requested the EU to support the ongoing environmental development programme in Sri Lanka. Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Dennis Chaibi said that the new technology used by European countries for controlled emission has addressed the problems faced by the people due to climate change. 


The two sides exchanged views on issues such as the attainment of economic prosperity, the enforcement of rule of law, reconciliation and interfaith harmony.
