A nine-hour long statement was recorded from former defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando on Monday in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said.

Mr. Fernando was arrested and released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate last week.

Delivering a lengthy order with regard to the maintainability of the case under Section 296 of the Penal Code, Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne held that there was insufficient evidence to frame murder charges against Mr. Fernando under Section 296 of the Penal Code.
