The allegation made by President Maithripala Sirisena on the Lotus Tower Project is an attempt to prevent the plaudits due to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government for making it a reality, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said yesterday.

MP C.B. Ratnayake told a news conference that the President had failed to make a statement on the alleged misappropriation of Rs.2 billion for the past four and a half years.
“The President, who remained silent on this matter for so many years, has suddenly made an allegation at the opening of the Lotus Tower to prevent the praise due to Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government for launching this project,” he said.

Meanwhile, MP Rohitha Abeygunawardana said no law enforcement authority had taken any action on this matter for so long.

“However, the loss incurred by suspending the project after this government came to power amounted to several billions.

A report issued by the Auditor General’s Department validated this,” he said adding that the President’s allegations should be probed.
The MP said the Chinese Government would probably issue a statement on this matter soon.
