The allegations levelled by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) against the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa are baseless and have been brought to court by the government with political motives, the SLPP presidential candidate’s spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told a news conference held at the party headquarters.

After playing a recording of the telephone conversation between CIABOC’s former Director General Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasinghe and Avant Garde Maritime Services (Pvt) Ltd. Chairman Nissanka Senadhipathi, he said it was clear proof that allegations had been made with political motives.

In the recording, Ms. Wickramasinghe admitted that she regretted her allegations against Mr. Rajapaksa and claimed her actions were based only on the needs of “Karumakkara” politics. “We can understand the basis of this claim. The FCID is under the jurisdiction of Temple Trees and as the former CIABOC’s DG herself stated, her actions were based only on the needs of some politicians. The government’s actions in the past five years have clearly been a blame game targeting all Rajapaksas,” he said.
